How Mickey Mouse Came to Be
Mickey Mouse is over eighty years old. He looks much younger, but he was sketched by Walt Disney while he was travelling on a train to LA back in 1927. Walt was depressed over losing the rights to Oswald the Rabbit, and maybe just as well, or Mickey Mouse would not exist today.
Mortimer Mouse was Mickey Mouse’s first name, but this soon changed. There are a number of stories doing the rounds as to why the name changed, but the most popular belief is that Walt’s wife didn’t like the name. Although Mickey Mouse has put on some weight over the years, he still sports the same outfit that he wore back in 1928.
Mickey Mouse could have easily just become another cartoon character alongside Betty Boop and Popeye, but instead he became one of the most beloved characters in the world.
What lead to Mickey Mouse’s meteoric rise to stardom could only have been his cheerful, optimistic and resilient character, as well as the fact that he is very cute and lovable. Mind you it is said that Mickey Mouse achieved true fame because Walt Disney decided to give him a voice. At that stage most films where silent, and Mickey’s first three films were also silent. Walt Disney spent all he had on creating three Mickey Mouse cartoons with soundtracks, included in this first set was Steamboat Willie. It was difficult, as the musicians had to keep time with the cartoon, and the money ran short, but with Walt’s perseverance, the job was finally done.
Out of the three cartoons, Steamboat Willie was the only successful one, and it premiered at New York’s Colony Theater on the 18th of November 1928. Within months some new Mickey Mouse shorts were produced including Plane Crazy. Mickey’s rise to stardom had begun and the mouse was a national fad in no time at all.
Walt, very cleverly, started up a line of merchandise for Mickey Mouse items, and a fan club also came into being. By the year 1937, Mickey had had a face lift, and Disney Studio’s was producing approximately twelve Mickey Mouse shorts a year. Disney himself provided Mickey’s high pitched voice.
Mickey Mouse’s cheerful face is one of the most recognizable images in the world today, and he even tops Santa Clause in this department. Mickey Mouse hasn’t released any new movies in a while, but he is still much loved and adored by all ages.

What next would spring forth from the pencil of the bar-none animation pioneer who first drew Mickey Mouse and executed Disney’s premiere Mouse shorts in the late 1920s (Steamboat Willie, Plane Crazy, Gallopin’ Groucho, Mickey’s Follies, Karnival Kid, etc.)? Iwerks initial solo outing, Fiddlesticks, the debut vehicle for his would-be new star Flip the Frog, marked a clear continuation of his vintage Mickey talkies with its tight sound-and-image synchronicity and with its use of a certain unbilled supporting player (the hard-to-miss Mickey Mouse look-alike, playing a tear-jerky violin in a duet with Flip.) |

Cartoons That Time Forgot/Ub Iwerks Collection #2 $9.99 Cartoons That Time Forgot: The Ub Iwerks Collection celebrates the pioneering solo cartoon work of Ub Iwerks, who was Walt Disney’s foremost animator/collaborator in the formative early years. These are historical cartoon shorts from the early 1930′s some of which haven’t been seen since their initial theatrical release. Others are old friends now viewed for the first time on DVD in unfaded, pristine prints from the original negatives. Iwerks’ undisputed status as the co-inventor of Mickey Mouse has acted retrospectively as both a claim to fame and as a tough thing to live down. In designing Disney’s Mouse, after all, Iwerks created an aggregation of blackened-in circle shapes which caused commotion everywhere and would amount to nothing less than one of the most resonant pop culture icons of the 20th century, impossible to top. Small wonder that Iwerks’ independently-conceived Mickey follow-up Flip The Frog, born in 1930 and already deceased by 1933, has been relegated to footnote oblivioun by most of today’s official critical overviews. In taking one of his own bits from, say, the 1928 Mickey cartoon The Karnival Kid and reprising it in the 1932 Flip film The Circus, with Flip now cast in the role of the food vendor who spanks his trained hot dogs for not behaving properly, Iwerks could be accused, contradictorily, either of plagiarism or of shameless self-quotation. |
