Divided Lunch

Are Dominicans divided by skin tone?
I was talking to a white guy yesterday who said he travelled to the Dominican Republic and was shocked at how divided the Dominicans were regarding skin tone. He said, literally, on one side of the block is all darker Dominicans, but in the tourist areas it is all light Dominicans. The restuarants only hire light Dominicans in the day, but by lunch and dinner, there is an all-white staff.
Is there any truth to this?
I don’t doubt it. Most Dominicans, most Hispanics really, like to say there is no racism in their country and they don’t see race or color. Like the Black Dominicans just happen to be the poorest and most discriminated against. Whatever, not buying it.
And it doesn’t help with most Dominicans I know are the most racist people out there. They pick on dark skin and nappy hair (and straighten the heck out of their hair and skin bleaching is a booming industry there). They don’t like Black people and deny they are part Black or Black even when it is obvious like they look Mulatto or even straight up Black. They are very prejudice against Haitians, who are noticeably darker, ever since Rafeal Trujillo voted to kick all Haitians out of DR becuase they were “darkening” the country. Some argue this is about not liking labels or wanting to embrace all that is in them. Whatever cool, I am not for the One Drop Rule either so I bought into it for awhile but noticed it wasn’t the Black lable like they claimed, they want to say they had no African heritage period.
I knew a little Dominican girl who believed the only way you could be beautiful is if you had straight blonde hair and blue eyes. I knew another dark skinned Dominican of obvious African ancestory and she was so messed up in the head. She wore blue contact lens and would lie and say they were her eyes (she later admitted this). She really hated her skin color and hair texture and felt White people were better. Look at the women Dominicans send to beauty pageants. In a country with so many Black mixed people, they have only had two women with noticeably African admixture represent their country. I have been to Dominican American (never actually been to DR itself) restuarants and noticed the service the clientele recieved went steadily down the darker they got. I know of Dominican American businesses that outright refused to serve Black people by glaring at the person until they left and treated them very badly. I could go on for days, point is I don’t doubt it one bit. Many Dominicans are racist, but try to get one to admit it.

A Thousand Sighs, a Thousand Revolts $16 Though the Kurds played a major military and tactical role in the United States’ recent war with Iraq, most of us know little about this fiercely independent, long-marginalized people. Now acclaimed journalist Christiane Bird, who riveted readers with her tour of Islamic Iran in Neither East Nor West, travels through this volatile part of the world to tell the Kurds’ story, using personal observations and in-depth research to illuminate an astonishing history and vibrant culture. For the twenty-five to thirty million Kurds, Kurdistan is both an actual and a mythical place: an isolated, largely mountainous homeland that has historically offered sanctuary from the treacherous outside world and yet does not exist on modern maps. Parceled out among the four nation-states of Iraq, Turkey, Syria, and Iran after World War I, Kurdistan is a divided land with a tragic history, where the indomitable Kurds both celebrate their ancient culture and fight to control their own destiny. Occupying some of the Middle East’s most strategic and richest terrain, the Kurds are the fourth-largest ethnic group in the region and the largest ethnic group in the world without a state to call their own. Whether dancing at a Kurdish wedding in Iran, bearing witness to the destroyed Kurdish countryside in southeast Turkey, having lunch with a powerful exiled agha in Syria, or visiting the sites of Saddam Hussein’s horrific chemical attacks in Iraq, the intrepid, insightful Bird sheds light on a violently stunning world seen by few Westerners. Part mesmerizing travelogue, part action-packed history, part reportage, and part cultural study, this critical book offers timely insight into an unknown butincreasingly influential part of the world. Bird paints a moving and unforgettable portrait of a people uneasily poised between a stubborn past and an impatient future. From the Hardcover edition. |

Get Healthy, Get Happy $2 Small change adds up. Put those dimes, nickels, and pennies into a jar every day, and watch the dollars grow over time. Make small changes in daily habits — meals and snacks, relationships, work, workouts, leisure — and a much healthier, happier, and better person emerges. In this succinct, accessible book, sportswoman and motivational speaker Julie Isphording shows how to make it happen. For example, says the author, replacing a soft drink with water at just one meal — say, lunch — increases water consumption by 30 gallons per year while avoiding 50,000 calories of carbonated sugar and $500 in costs. And that isn’t counting the psychological benefits of healthier consumption. Divided into five chapters covering mental attitude, healthy lifestyle, exercise, diet, and inspirations for staying the course, Get Healthy, Get Happy offers a simple, smart program for busy people who want to make life changes but don’t think they have the time. |

Star of the Morning $12.95 Born on the wrong side of a racial divide in apartheid-torn Cape Town, young sisters Ruby and Rose exist in a world where they are not welcome. As part of the Cape Colored community they are considered socially inferior, and even within their own social group the sisters live in the poor end of town. When their mother dies from a protracted illness, the girls” fate falls into the hands of Aunt Olive. Ruby knows that their aunt”s home will not be open to them–charity does not extend to the poor relations who would cast a smudge on such a respectable house. Instead, Aunt Olive condemns her nieces to the local orphanage, relieving her conscience with monthly invitations to Sunday lunch. In the orphanage the girls grow up sheltered from a divided world that they do not yet fully understand, but the day approaches when Ruby and Rose must forge their own paths in life and confront the lessons that apartheid enforces. |
